President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias assured that the Greek Cypriot side is entering new talks on Cyprus in September, extending a hand of good will and maintaining political fairness for a just, viable and mutually acceptable solution.
In a speech at Paphos to mark the 1974 military coup against the democratically elected President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, and the Turkish invasion which followed five days later, resulting in the illegal occupation of 37 percent of the Republic`s territory and its de facto division, President Christofias noted that there are still some very important and serious issues where core disagreements and differences remain.
He expressed the hope that the Greek Cypriot side will meet the relevant desire by the Turkish Cypriot side on the outcome of the new talks.
The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, decided Friday to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3rd, with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem.
