The trade deficit in Cyprus shrank by EUR 146 mln in April compared with the same month of 2008 according to preliminary figures for the month.
Total exports fell by 9.1% to EUR 85.7 mln (of which EUR 35.9 mln were exports to the EU).
Total imports fell even further, however, by 25.7% to EUR 445.5 mln (of which EUR 305.7 mln were imports from the EU).
The preliminary trade deficit was EUR 359.9 mln, compared with EUR 505.4 mln in April 2008.
Meanwhile, revised data show that total imports/arrivals in January-March 2009 amounted to EUR 1,358.7 mln compared with EUR 1,701.5 mln in January-March 2008.
Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other Member States) in January-March 2009 were EUR 219.1 mln compared to EUR 271.5 mln in January-March 2008.
The trade deficit therefore shrank to EUR 1,139.6 mln in January-March 2009 compared to EUR 1,430.0 mln in January-March 2008.
During March 2009 total imports/arrivals (covering total imports from third countries and arrivals from other Member States) were valued at EUR 503.4 mln.
Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other Member States), including stores and provisions, in March 2009 amounted to EUR 77.7 mln.
Εxports/dispatches of domestically produced goods, including stores and provisions, were EUR 41.2 mln whilst exports/dispatches of foreign goods, including stores and provisions, were EUR 36.5mln.
