Egypt might be in a position to supply Cyprus with liquefied natural gas in 2013, following contacts that Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides had in Cairo last week.
The two sides decided to designate action groups to discuss further the issue of supplying Cyprus with liquefied natural gas from Egypt. The first meeting is expected to take place during the last two weeks of December.
The Cairo meetings took place following a ministerial decision in June 2008, with regard to the purchase and supply of natural gas to Cyprus, and after an invitation from the Petroleum Minister of Egypt.
Paschalides was accompanied by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority President, the President of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus Board of Directors, the Director of the Energy Service and the Operation and Maintenance Generation Director of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
The Cypriot delegation met on October 28 the Egyptian Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahme. During the meeting Paschalides referred to the very good and friendly relations between Cyprus and Egypt as well as to the excellent cooperation and exchange of know-how in certain fields. Referring to recent decisions by the Cyprus government on the work of the Energy Centre, he stressed the importance of importing natural gas to Cyprus.
The Cypriot delegation also had meetings with the President and other officials of the Egyptian Holding Company for Natural Gas (EGAS). EGAS officials presented the work of the company while the Cypriot delegation presented the work of the Energy Centre and the main activities of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
