Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis arrives for a two-day official visit Wednesday, timed to coincide with the outcome of the Turkish Cypriot assembly election on Sunday.
Karamanlis, accompanied by his wife Natassa and Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni, as well as other officials, will arrive at 1pm and will be welcomed at Larnaca airport by President Demetris Christofias, First Lady Elsie Christofias and the Greek Ambassador to Nicosia, Vassilis Papaioannou.
After taking the official salute at the Presidential Palace and laying a wreath at Makarios’ statue, Elise Christofias and Natassa Karamanlis will head to the Archaeological Museum and the Christos Steliou Ioannou Foundation.
The official meetings at the Palace will include the two heads of government and their foreign ministers, the two government spokesmen and other officials, after which the Greek delegation will meet with the heads of the main political parties – Akel, Disy, Evroko and Ecologists – at the Hilton Cyprus.
Dora Bakoyianni will also meet a representation of the relatives of missing persons, while the day will conclude with a state banquet.
On Thursday morning, the Greek Prime Minister’s delegation will visit the military cemetery at Tymvos in Makedonitissa after which they will head to the Central Prisons to visit the graves of the EOKA heroes, while Costas Karamanlis will receive the gold medal of the EOKA Memorial Council of the 1955-59 Struggle.
The delegation will then head to the House of Representatives where they will be received by the assembly’s President, Marios Garoyian and Karamanlis will address the House. Natassa Karamanlis will then visit former First Lady Photine Papadopoulou, while the Prime Minister and Dora Bakoyianni will meet with the party leaders of Diko and Edek, before heading to the Archbishopric to meet Chrysostomos II.
Later in the evening the whole delegation will head to Christofias’ holiday home in Kellaki for a private dinner, after which they will head to Larnaca airport for the return to Athens.
