Europe, Japan data point to worse times ahead

PRESIDENTIAL Commissioner George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot special representative Ozdil Nami will meet today to review preparations ahead of next week’s peace talks.

The duo are due to meet at the Ledra Palace in Nicosia at 10am.

Iacovou said the pair planned to discuss issues that had come up during their last meeting and the July 25 meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

Iacovou said he and Nami would discuss the Limnitis checkpoint, which he hoped would be ready to open by September 3.

They will also talk about the procedure for the direct negotiations, which will actually begin during the two leaders’ second meeting on September 11.

The first meeting on September 3 is expected to deal with procedural matters.

Christofias and Talat are scheduled to meet next Wednesday for the first direct talks since the UN-brokered process collapsed in 2004.

Iacovou said that on average the two leaders would meet once a week and that their advisers as well as the working groups would also have a role to play in the negotiations.
