Japan economy dives most since 1974

TWO JORDANIAN men have been arrested on suspicion of raping a Finnish tourist and attempting to rape another in the Famagusta district during the early hours of Sunday, police said yesterday.

The women had been holidaying at a Limassol hotel when they met up with the suspects, aged 26 and 19, who offered to take them to Ayia Napa to party on Saturday night. At the end of the night and en route back to their hotel, the men allegedly asked the Finns for sex while they were in the car. When the women refused, the suspects sped up and took them to an area called Pervola on British Bases territory, near Xylofagou, where the 20-year-old woman was brutally raped. The second woman managed to escape and reported the incident to police, sources said.

Sovereign Base Area police are investigating the case. The two men have already been arrested and remanded in custody in connection with the incident.

Sources said there was a possibility the woman had been raped by both men although the 19-year-old has denied raping the woman. DNA samples are expected to determine which of the two, if not both, were involved in the attack. The men are not believed to have been wearing condoms.

The two women yesterday flew back to Finland and are expected to return if the case goes to trial. The 20-year-old, who was described as traumatized by her horrific ordeal, wanted to return home as soon as possible. The women’s holiday had been coming to an end anyway.

SBA police yesterday refused to comment on the investigation while it was still ongoing.
