JERUSALEM –  Israel's leaders are marking their country's 64th year of independence with a ceremony in Jerusalem, singing classical Hebrew songs and honoring outstanding soldiers.

Israelis have thronged beaches and parks across the nation for barbecues, and military bases are open to visitors. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will award the Israel Prize, a prestigious honor in the fields of entertainment and academia, later on Thursday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has congratulated Israel on its anniversary. Her statement Wednesday said Israel and America are "united by a deep and unbreakable bond based on mutual interests and respect."

While Independence Day is a joyful celebration in Israel, Palestinians will mark it in mid-May with a day of mourning.
