After his meeting with President Demetris Christofias, Wooton – who was accompanied by the president of the committee for policy and resources of the city of London, Stewart Frazer – said he was in Cyprus in view of Cyprus assuming the EU Presidency on July 1.
His meeting with Christofias, he added, “was fruitful and the president set out his thoughts about the EU presidency and its importance to Cyprus”.
He added that he met with the Under Secretary for EU Affairs, Andreas Mavroyiannis, Finance Minister Vasos Shiarly and Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis, with whom he discussed the issue of energy and specifically the gas discoveries in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone.
Wooton said his visit to Cyprus underlined the importance that EU member states attribute to the EU Presidency of Cyprus, adding that he invited the president to visit London to watch the Olympic Games in the summer.
Replying to reporters, Lord Wooton said that jobs and growth is a common agenda across the world, and expressed the belief that the Cyprus EU presidency will follow that line.
