The cabinet will discuss the possibility of allowing the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to build and operate a mobile desalination unit at Vasiliko, to help relieve the serious water shortage problem confronting the island, Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis said.
“We are studying in collaboration with the Electricity Authority, the creation of a mobile unit in the region of Vasiliko,” Polynikis said during a conference on water management organised in Limassol by the socialist EDEK party, adding that the government was still in consultation with the EAC on the creation of permanent unit at Vasiliko. A permanent unit for Paphos was also being mooted.
Polynikis said in the short term, the measure would include increasing output from the Dhekelia and Larnaca desalination units and the importation of water from Greece. Medium to long term plans would centre on drilling for reserves, which began during the week at Stavrovouni, and setting up more desalination units, the minister said. Mobile desalination units were planned for Moni in Limassol, which would be ready in October, a mobile unit for Paphos, which will be ready next April. There is also due to be a desalination unit at Episkopi in Limassol by 2010.
